MicroSkills Fundamentals

A MicroSkill is the smallest reliable unit of agentic execution. Let’s walk through what they are, why we built them, and how they make your AI systems more predictable.

What is a MicroSkill?

Think of a MicroSkill as a narrowly scoped capability your AI agent can call through a clean, structured interface. It does one thing, does it predictably every time, and does it through a stable contract you can rely on.

Here’s what every MicroSkill gives you:

  • A clear name following the domain.capability pattern
  • A precise, single purpose
  • A strict input schema
  • A predictable output schema
  • A declared behavior mode (STRICT, VERIFIABLE, or BEST_EFFORT)
  • Metadata for discovery by agents and developers
  • Built-in metering, security, and observability
Examplejson
{
  "name": "text.slugify",
  "description": "Converts text into a lowercase URL-safe slug.",
  "behavior": "STRICT",
  "input": { "text": "MicroSkills: Small Tools, Big Leverage" },
  "output": { "slug": "microskills-small-tools-big-leverage" }
}

Why MicroSkills matter

AI agents are brilliant at reasoning, planning, and adapting to context. But they’re not automatically reliable at small, precise execution tasks — formatting, validation, normalization, hashing, signing. These look trivial, yet they hide a surprising number of decisions.

Ask an agent to generate a URL slug and you might get different results across runs: sometimes hyphens, sometimes underscores, sometimes mixed case. It’s not a question of intelligence — it’s a question of execution stability.

MicroSkills turn those shaky micro-decisions into stable, callable capabilities. Your agent hands the operation to a trusted execution surface and uses the structured result to keep its workflow moving.

Tip
The more autonomy you give your agents, the less room there is for vague tools. MicroSkills give you the precision that scales right alongside them.

Behavior modes

Every Squillify MicroSkill tells you up front how it behaves, so you and your agents always know what to expect.

STRICT

The same input always produces the same output. Reach for STRICT MicroSkills whenever consistency is what matters most.

Examples
text.slugify → Always produces the same slug for the same input
text.word_count → Always returns the same count
data.csv_normalize  → Always normalizes identically

VERIFIABLE

The MicroSkill produces an output you can check, sign, or prove. Perfect for audit trails, proof-of-execution, and enterprise compliance.

Example
crypto.squillify_signature → Produces a cryptographic receipt
                             that proves a payload was processed

BEST_EFFORT

The MicroSkill is genuinely useful but not deterministic by nature. Variability is expected, documented, and perfectly acceptable here.

Example
platform.entropy_token → Generates a random token
                         (different each call, by design)
Note
There’s nothing wrong with non-deterministic capabilities — the only mistake is pretending they’re deterministic. Squillify keeps the distinction honest and explicit, so you’re never caught off guard.

Naming conventions

Skill names follow the domain.capability pattern. We keep them boring, explicit, and predictable on purpose — because your agents read them.

Good names
text.slugify
text.word_count
data.csv_normalize
crypto.squillify_signature
platform.entropy_token
math.random_number

We steer clear of vague names like smart_process, do_everything, or magic_cleaner. The name is part of the interface, so it should tell you exactly what you’re getting.

Composability

MicroSkills are built to be combined. Instead of one giant tool, you get smaller capabilities your agents can string together into workflows:

1. data.detect_csv_dialect   → Detect format
2. data.csv_normalize        → Normalize to standard structure
3. data.schema_validate      → Validate against a schema
4. crypto.squillify_signature → Sign the result

Every step stays understandable, testable, and independently observable. It’s solid software engineering, applied to agentic systems.

A MicroSkill isn’t a prompt (prompts guide, MicroSkills execute). It isn’t an agent (agents reason, MicroSkills perform bounded operations). And it isn’t a microservice (microservices are deployment units, MicroSkills are agent-facing capability units).

Available immediately

Every MicroSkill in the Squillify catalog is ready for your LLMs and agentic solutions the moment you create an API key. They show up as native tools when you connect over MCP, and as structured endpoints when you use the REST API.

No training, no prompt engineering, no custom integration code — just reliable execution your agents can trust from day one.
