Line Counter
text.count_lines
Overview
You pass text (or a file_ref); we count lines using logical_lines (all lines separated by breaks) or non_empty_lines (only lines with non-whitespace), with explicit trailing-newline handling. We detect LF, CRLF, and CR. Do not use this for paragraph or word counting.
Line counting varies by trailing-newline and empty-line policy — we make both explicit.
Reliability
STRICT and deterministic for a given policy and count_trailing_empty_line setting. Input validation (not retryable): neither text nor file_ref; both provided; text too long; invalid policy.
Context footprint
Removes ambiguity about trailing newline semantics with one call. Accepts inline text up to 1,000,000 chars or file input via file_ref (up to 2 MB). Upload files via POST /v1/files/upload before passing file_ref. A successful call costs 1 execution credit.
When to use it
When you need a deterministic line count and must document the policy used.
When you need paragraph-level structure — use text.count_paragraphs.
Scope
Non-goals
- Does not count paragraphs
- Does not reformat text

Input schema
| Field | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| text | string | No | Bounded inline text source. Required unless file_ref is provided. |
| file_ref | string | No | Tenant-scoped opaque text-file reference. Omit it to use the required inline text; never send both. |
| policy | string | No | Line policy; omit it for logical_lines. |
| count_trailing_empty_line | boolean | No | Whether a final break opens a counted line; omit it for true. |
| return_segments | boolean | No | Reserved segment flag; omit it for false. |
Output schema
| Field | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| skill | string | Yes | Producing skill key. |
| count | integer | Yes | Counted lines. This non-negative total is bounded by the documented input limit. |
| unit | string | Yes | Measurement unit for the returned line total. |
| policy | string | Yes | Applied line policy. |
| count_trailing_empty_line | boolean | Yes | Applied trailing-line setting. |
| line_breaks_detected | array | Yes | Bounded array containing from 0 through 3 items, where each item is one detected line-break style: LF, CRLF, or CR. |
| warnings | array | Yes | Bounded warning array containing from 0 through 4 items, where each item is one non-fatal advisory string. |
