Reading Time Estimator

text.estimate_reading_time

ProductionBounded custom (Class B)Deterministicbest-effortinstantv1.0.0
File inputNo network

Overview

You pass text (or a file_ref); we count its words and divide by a reading speed you control, then hand back the duration in seconds and minutes, a slower/faster band around it, and the arithmetic we used. Rounding and a minimum duration are yours to set. Treat the number as an estimate — real readers vary, and we never pretend otherwise.

Reading time is a simple formula, but LLMs often get it wrong or hide their WPM assumption. We make the assumption explicit and return an uncertainty band.

Reliability

BEST_EFFORT — the result is an estimate, not a measurement. WPM, rounding, and range_seconds (±20% slow/fast reader band) are explicit in the output. Input validation (not retryable): words_per_minute must be positive.

Context footprint

Accepts inline text up to 1M chars or file_ref (up to 2 MB). Upload files via POST /v1/files/upload before passing file_ref. A successful call costs 1 execution credit.

When to use it

When you need a reading-time estimate for content metadata and want the WPM assumption transparent and configurable.

Do not use when you need audience-adjusted timing or when the content is mostly non-text (slides, diagrams, video).

Scope

Note
Estimates how long your text takes to read using word count divided by configurable words-per-minute, with rounding options and a ±20% uncertainty band.

Non-goals

  • Does not adjust for content complexity or reader expertise
  • Does not account for technical jargon density or rich formatting
  • Does not predict comprehension time — only raw reading duration
