Speaking Time Estimator
text.estimate_speaking_time
Overview
You pass text (or a file_ref) and a delivery style — slow at 110, neutral at 130, fast at 160 words per minute, or custom with your own rate; we count the words, divide, and return the duration in seconds and minutes, a slower/faster band around it, and the arithmetic we used. Treat the number as an estimate — pauses and audience interaction are not in it.
Speaking pace varies by delivery style. We expose preset WPM rates and return an uncertainty band so you can plan rehearsals without guessing.
Reliability
BEST_EFFORT — speaking time is inherently variable. delivery_style, WPM, and range_seconds (±20% slower/faster band) are explicit. Custom style requires words_per_minute. Input validation (not retryable): words_per_minute must be positive.
Context footprint
Accepts inline text up to 1M chars or file_ref (up to 2 MB). Upload files via POST /v1/files/upload before passing file_ref. A successful call costs 1 execution credit.
When to use it
When you are planning a presentation, speech, or podcast script and want an estimate tied to a named delivery style or custom WPM.
Do not use for reading-time badges, performance-grade timing, or sessions where pauses and audience interaction dominate duration.
Scope
Non-goals
- Does not account for pauses, audience interaction, or slide transitions
- Does not model breathing patterns or emphasis
- Does not predict actual stage delivery — only a WPM-based estimate
